About NSW is a pilot project, linking collections and information across institutions. The project has a number of content partners, including The Powerhouse Museum, The National Archives, The National Library, NSW State Library, The Australian Dictionary of Biography, NSW Heritage Branch, Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Art Gallery of NSW.
We work to solve common technical issues, using open source tools, so that information about NSW can be accessed and reused by all citizens, including tourists, schools and family history researchers.
The Powerhouse Museum
The project has received media coverage, including articles about The NSW Baby Names explorer (built by the About NSW team, but hosted on the NSW Government Portal):
It has also received a lot of attention on blogs and social networks, for example, Information Aesthetics wrote an article, "About NSW: Putting Data Online The Australian Way" available at http://from.ph/5w
The site is currently averages 40,000 unique visitors a month, without any promotion or marketing budget.
Addition details or information
About NSW runs on a python/django tech stack, uses open source tools (we have contributed back to the community, including the Python to html sanitiser).
You can read more about the project, and the technical details on the 'Fresh & New' blog.
